my name is spelled ‘shinthu’ – pronounced sin – thu. the ‘th’ in my name is similar to the sound of “th” in they.
it’s important to me that my art reflects the times, and though i cannot share much of what i have been working on (yet) – i am hoping that i can soon. film – both film photography and cinematography are art forms that i have always been drawn to and moved by. the ways in which they convey moments are like no other medium.
i’ve been shooting film photography on and off for about a decade now. these are a few of my favourite shots. the first photo is a shot from when i was writing in my journal. this is often something that is personal for many of us. i want to be able to share what is not often at the surface – the narratives that are missing, the experiences we do not see enough of, or cannot put faces to. even the narratives that i share – the experiences i shy away from telling. such as the narrative of being a first generation child, a child of immigrants, a person of colour, a woman, amongst so many others.
the last photo is a moment i was grateful i was able to capture. these are two women who truly inspire me in countless ways. i think this shot has managed to capture the essence of their relationship as mother and daughter. they lift each other in both their vulnerability and strength. the neat thing is, this photo can be interpreted differently depending on it’s viewer. it’s special because it was if i was not there. that’s an important aspect of photography and film – being able to convey something meaningful where the camera’s presence is not felt.
